Donor Spotlight - Kokua Endowment
Through the Kokua Endowment for C.A.T.S. Clinical and Sport Psychology, the important work being provided by Sport Psychology, including mental health services for our 504 student-athletes, will receive partial funding in perpetuity.
C.A.T.S. Clinical and Sport Psychology is one department within the comprehensive and award-winning Cedric Dempsey C.A.T.S. Program (Commitment to an Athlete’s Total Success). Arizona Athletics is extremely fortunate and proud to offer industry-leading support for our student-athletes, assisting as they navigate the challenging road to success in intercollegiate athletics and pursuing their college degree.
We are particularly proud to share the Story of Martell Irby and the impact he has made at Arizona, while also highlighting the importance of mental health services.
Sam and Molly are both proud graduates of the University of Arizona, and their commitment to the support of C.A.T.S. Clinical and Sport Psychology is personal.
Sam has long been involved in leadership at the University of Arizona. He was a member of the Bobcats Senior Honorary, the philanthropy chair of the Kappa Sigma Fraternity and the president of Chain Gang (Links) Junior Honorary. He also served his fellow students as the Student Body Executive Vice-President as well as a student representative lobbying the Board of Regents and the State Legislature on behalf of student concerns. All of this while completing his undergraduate degree in marketing, before earning his Juris Doctorate from the U of A James E. Rogers College of Law.
“It was very important to us to be able to support the mental health of U of A students” Sam shared at the time of the gift. “To be able to support this area, while assisting Arizona Athletics and the U of A, is a perfect way for us to give back.”
Molly, who was also involved with the U of A student government while majoring in Interdisciplinary Studies in Business, Spanish and French, is currently a psychotherapist. Giving to an area of service that has been a passion of hers since her time at UofA was very important.
“I’m passionate about mental health care and the well-being of our community,” Molly emphasized. “We wanted to contribute to a department that is very visible and helps bring the campus together.”
The Chang’s are hopeful their gift will inspire and encourage others to give to Arizona Athletics, and to support the Kokua Endowment for C.A.T.S. Clinical and Sport Psychology.
“We hope this is just the beginning of more direct funding to support the mental health of our amazing student-athletes,” Sam said of their vision of the endowment.
